Bainbridge Island Ferry Ramps

Location

Bainbridge Island Ferry Terminal, Washington

Project Description

KWH was awarded the erection of the new Bainbridge Island Ferry Terminal Overhead Loading Walkway. This pedestrian bridge is made up of four truss spans totaling over 375 feet in length and was installed during a 1-week closure of the ferry terminal allowing only walk-on passengers.

Due to the limited staging real estate, the spans were shipped by barge from the fabrication shop in Tacoma to Bainbridge Island. While coordinating with the active ferry schedule, the barge offloaded at the ferry boat slips and rolled off the spans using self-propelled dollies into the ferry holding lanes.

The pier has limited capacity due to its age, so the cranes used for the pick required engineered outrigger placements to prevent damage to the existing structure. Additional work included the erection of a temporary ACROW pedestrian bridge and elevator CAB rehabilitation.
