Burnaby Pedestrian Bridge – Highway 1
Location
Burnaby, B.C.
Project Description
KWH Constructors Ltd proudly delivered the successful erection of the Burnaby Pedestrian Bridge spanning Highway 1, showcasing our expertise in complex steel installations under challenging conditions.
The bridge design features two intersecting parabolic arches with a network of vertical steel cables down to the deck. The deck is partially precast panels and cast-in-place concrete near the ends, and is independently suspended from the cables with connections at two end floor beams and abutments only. The structure featured a clear span of 72m (236’) with a total steel weight of approximately 400 tonnes. Demonstrating a commitment to quality and structural integrity, the bridge arches and floor beams were entirely field welded, ensuring precision fit-up and long-term performance.
One of the most critical aspects of the project was the installation strategy. To minimize disruption to highway traffic, the fully assembled bridge was transported to site in a single piece during overnight hours. Using specialized transporters, the structure was carefully positioned and then jacked down into its final alignment, achieving a seamless and efficient placement within a tightly controlled closure window.
This project highlights KWH’s ability to execute highly coordinated lifts, deliver full field-welded solutions, and safely complete major infrastructure installations with minimal public impact.
