Centerm Maintenance Building
Location
Port of Vancouver, British Columbia
Project Description
The Centerm Maintenance Building is a 100-foot tall all-steel structure designed to service the RTG (Rubber Tired Gantry) stacking machines used in storing shipping containers at the container berths. The facility combines specialized crane servicing bays with integrated warehousing and office spaces.
The 107-foot columns of this crane servicing bay required exceptional planning and precision to ensure successful execution in a complex port environment. KWH was subcontracted by George Third & Son to erect all structural steel for the servicing bays and office levels. Proper erection sequencing was critical to maximize performance of available shoring and crane operations within the busy and restricted port setting.
Critical challenges overcome included the instability of 60-foot roof trusses, low tolerances on overhead crane rails, and the precise installation of the 100-foot main door frame. The project demonstrates sophisticated coordination and technical expertise in executing specialized heavy steel structures in constrained industrial environments.
