King George Station Ribbon Bridge

Location

Surrey, British Columbia

Project Description

The unique hybrid timber and steel structure is a specialized pedestrian bridge designed to connect the existing King George SkyTrain station area with future development in Surrey City Centre. The Ribbon Bridge spans 45m × 11.5m in plan and consists of two built-up cruciform columns, each with four Tee-shaped branches. Timber members are attached to the interior faces of the columns.

One column is supported by a 10-meter grillage composed of three built-up steel wide-flange sections that spans the roof of an underground parking exit. The roof framing features exterior members made of WWF steel, with all interior plan bracing composed of 12' × 24' glulam beams for diagonals and W18" steel beam verticals.

The steel fabrication work was exceptionally complex, requiring precise coordination between the steel and timber components to achieve the unique ribbon-like aesthetic while maintaining structural integrity and safety.
