VAHA Mass Timber High-Rise — KWH Constructors

Vancouver Affordable Housing Agency (VAHA)

Location

Vancouver, British Columbia

Project Description

In Downtown Vancouver, KWH Constructors erected a very iconic high-rise structure. Seventeen stories tall and reaching 172 feet into the skyline, the building is more than an architectural achievement. When built, this was the 9th tallest mass timber hybrid structure in the world — a bold statement in wood and steel.

Built to high-performance Passive House standards, it reflects a deep commitment to sustainability, reducing energy use while enhancing comfort for those who live and gather inside. Cross-laminated timber — strong, renewable, and warm in character — forms the backbone of the design, marking a pioneering step forward for high-rise residential wood construction in British Columbia.

Its structure tells a story of innovation. Point-supported cross-laminated timber floors rest gracefully on steel posts. Prefabricated, panelized exterior walls come together with precision and efficiency. At its centre, a ductile concrete core rises steadily, jump-formed from the foundation pit, anchoring the tower with strength and resilience.

Beyond the timber and steel framework, KWH also installed a structural steel façade, steel balconies, patios, window washing supports, and various miscellaneous steel members.
