Project Description

KWH Constructors was responsible for the steel and wood erection for the new SFU Stadium roof, executing a precise and technically demanding installation that blended structural performance with architectural finish.

The scope centered on the erection of five cantilevered steel box girders, each measuring 22 metres in length and weighing approximately 13 tonnes. These primary members were set onto five supporting columns, forming the backbone of the roof structure. The cantilever design required careful control of geometry and load transfer, particularly at the free ends of the girders.

To achieve the required elevations at the girder tips, each member was tied down at the rear using 3-inch diameter rods. These rods were pinned into steel anchor boxes with substantial 9-inch pins, creating a robust tension system that allowed for fine adjustment and precise setting of the cantilevered profiles. This approach ensured that final elevations were met with tight tolerances, critical for both structural integrity and architectural alignment.

Completing the system, timber CLT panel soffits were installed between the box girders. These panels were fitted with exacting precision, concealing the structural steelwork from view below while delivering a clean, finished appearance in line with the project’s architectural intent.
