Starwood W Hotel

Location

Seattle, Washington

Project Description

This popular 26-story downtown Seattle hotel is topped with a 50-foot high steel and glass pyramid that lights up the city skyline at night. The distinctive architectural crown presented significant erection challenges, requiring workable connection designs provided by Somerset to facilitate the steel installation.

KWH erected the complex pyramid structure using the building's tower crane, maximizing pre-assembly on the ground to minimize time and risk at height. A system of temporary struts and stays was engineered and deployed to safely support the structure through each phase of the erection sequence.

In addition to the signature rooftop feature, KWH installed the building canopies and all stairways throughout the entire hotel — completing the full envelope of architectural steel for the project.
